Honeycomb Nozzle for PCF

Honeycomb Provides Full Stack Observability for Debugging Live Production Software

Honeycomb Nozzle for PCF provides a way to consume messages from Pivotal Cloud Foundry’s logging Firehose, parse the messages it found there, structure and then forward them to Honeycomb. Users of both services can then use Honeycomb for analysis and debugging with Pivotal Cloud Foundry events.

Interactive Exploration of Firehose Event

Use Honeycomb for fast, interactive querying and filtering of the Firehose to power fine-grained exploratory analysis of Pivotal Cloud Foundry operational metrics, system events, HTTP Start/Stop events, and application logs.

Correlate Events Across Your Stack

Correlate Pivotal Cloud Foundry events and state with events from other parts of your stack, such as: databases, web servers, cache servers, user behavior, and custom events from your own instrumented code.

Scale your Pivotal Cloud Foundry Operational Expertise

Using Honeycomb playlists, shared histories, and other collaboration features—scale the expertise of your best Pivotal Cloud Foundry operators and debuggers across to your larger engineering and operations teams.

Honeycomb Overview

Honeycomb provides full stack observability—designed from the ground up to debug live production software, consume event data from any source with any data model, and make collaboration a central part of problem solving. Founded on the experience of debugging problems at the scale of millions of apps serving tens of millions of users, we empower all engineers to run, debug, optimize and truly understand their own production software.

Integration Features

The service is documented with instructions for setup and operation.

Encryption in motion. Data transmitted between app and service are encrypted.

Supports high availability against internal service failures to minimize downtime for bound applications.

Get visibility into details of service operation through standard monitoring and logging tools for products and Pivotal Cloud Foundry.

Quotas. Operators can place limits on service instance counts.

Developers have control over when to upgrade to new versions, subject to policies set by operators, so that app modifications and downtime can be managed.

Option to consume logs and metrics from the Loggregator firehose.

Option to consume platform component metrics from the Loggregator firehose.

The nozzle is deployed as an app running on Pivotal Cloud Foundry.

The nozzle is documented with instructions for setup and operation.

The nozzle adds org, space, and app names to app logs and metrics.

The nozzle caches org, space, and app names from metadata for performance.

The nozzle consumes data from the Loggregator firehose and forwards it to other applications and services via an encrypted channel.

The nozzle supports high availability against internal service failures to minimize event loss.

The nozzle makes use of multiple availability zones in cloud deployments to minimize event loss.

“We’re very excited to have this integration with Pivotal Cloud Foundry in order to serve growing demand in our own customer base for greater observability into Pivotal Cloud Foundry inside of Honeycomb!”

Charity Majors, CEO and cofounder, Honeycomb

How it Works

You will need to have (or create) an account with Honeycomb, create a UAA user that gives the Nozzle access to the Firehose and Cloud Controller, and then install and configure the Honeycomb Nozzle for PCF tile.
